A Royal Media Services (RMS) journalist has narrated how he was violently attacked by goons while covering the Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay on August 16.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking during a sit-down interview a day after the rally, the camera operator said the day had started like any other, with him and his colleague carrying out their usual work in Homa Bay.
The two journalists, both armed with cameras, decided to split up to capture the events from different vantage points. One remained behind the Linda Mwananchi convoy to monitor developments from the rear, while the other positioned himself ahead of the convoy.
According to the journalist, they had proceeded along the road leading to Homa Bay Town when the convoy was intercepted by scores of youths riding motorbikes.
📌 What You Need to Know
The men identified and singled them out as journalists, and then began asking one of the cameramen for a bribe so as to let them proceed with their coverage.
"They surrounded our vehicle and blocked the road with motorbikes. They later started demanding money from us before they let us pass," the journalist stated.
The journalist says that he retrieved his wallet, removed a Ksh100 note, and gave it to one of the goons. But at the same time, the goon noticed that the cameraman had more notes in his wallet, which the cameraman says was more than Ksh4,000, a point where he says was the genesis of all their problems in Homa Bay.
The goons grabbed his wallet, which prompted the journalist to signal his driver to start the car and leave the area.
It is at that moment that hundreds of goons suddenly appeared from the surrounding farms, armed to the teeth with machetes, stones, and clubs.
As the driver was attempting to start the car and turn around to escape, they realized that their car tires had been poked and were completely damaged beyond repair, thwarting all their attempts to escape.
