President William Ruto has announced a reduction in fertiliser prices from Ksh2,500 to Ksh2,000, offering relief for farmers countrywide.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

President Ruto made the announcement while speaking during a church service at A.I.C. Makutano in Taita Taveta County on Sunday, August 23.

He explained that the price cut on subsidised fertiliser will take effect from next month, giving farmers a two-week window before the new rates kick in, while also revealing a 50 per cent nationwide cut on maize fertiliser.

“I am making an announcement to all our farmers that from next month, in the next two weeks, we are going to subsidize maize seeds by 50% and reduce the cost of fertilizer by another 500 shillings. So that the bag that was selling at 2,500 is going to be sold at 2,000 from the next two weeks,” President Ruto stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

The President was firm that this directive should apply uniformly to all other maize fertiliser prices sold across different regions.

To see this plan come to fruition, he stated that his administration has already set aside adequate funds to ensure this ambitious plan becomes a reality without any hitches.

He tied the price cuts directly to the country's food security goals, noting that farmers need affordable inputs to boost production this season, since the long rains are expected to begin in October and run through the planting season.

“I am urging our farmers to use the rain that is coming, so that we can grow more food and make sure that we stabilize our food security in the Republic of Kenya. So let's continue with that, and let's do it together,” President Ruto added.

This marks another phase of the Kenya Kwanaza administration in the reduction of the fertiliser for farmers countrywide, as the last programme has slashed 50-kg bag prices from over Ksh6,000-Ksh7,500 to Ksh2,500, thus easing farm input costs, boosting crop yields.

It also comes at a time when the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) and global climate authorities have flagged an 81 per cent chance of a strong El Niño, bringing above-average short rains from October into early 2027, raising fears of a double food crisis.
