President William Ruto has appointed former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Competition Authority of Kenya for three years.

In a notice obtained by Kenyans.co.ke , he also reappointed former Tigania East MP Joseph Muthuri as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS).

The appointments dated Friday, June 26, 2026, take effect immediately for Murungi and from June 30, 2026, for Muthuri, with both expected to serve for equal terms.

While appointing Murungi, the Head of State revoked the appointment of Charles Mahinda as chairperson of the Competition Authority's Board of Directors.

The former Meru governor returns to public service after previously serving in various senior government positions, including as Cabinet minister and county chief.

Murungi served as Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister between 2003 and 2005 before he was later appointed as Minister of Energy up to 2013 under former President Mwai Kibaki's regime.

Ruto also announced the re-appointment of Stanley Kiptis as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) for another three-year term, effective June 26, 2026.

The appointments are part of the government's ongoing efforts to streamline leadership in state corporations and other public institutions.
