President William Ruto has announced that the Ksh3 billion Kenyatta Avenue–Upper Hill viaduct in Nairobi will be completed and opened before December after years of delay.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking on Monday, June 29, during the commissioning of the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover, the President said the project located near All Saints’ Cathedral is now 60 per cent complete.
“Just a short distance from here, construction of the Kenyatta Avenue–Upper Hill viaduct, a Ksh 3 billion investment, is now 60 per cent complete,” he stated.
According to Ruto, the long-delayed viaduct will ease traffic congestion in one of Nairobi’s busiest commercial corridors and improve access into the Central Business District (CBD) once it is completed.
📌 What You Need to Know
“Once finished, it will significantly improve access into the CBD and ease congestion across one of the city’s busiest commercial zones,” he said.
Construction, which began in September 2020, was delayed for several years due to payment disputes with contractors before works resumed in July 2025.
“The viaduct was delayed for years, but before December, I will open it. People going to the CBD will stop being disturbed by traffic jams,” Ruto added.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) had earlier confirmed in August 2025 that two viaducts were under construction to decongest key city routes linking CBD with major commercial zones.
The Kenyatta Avenue viaduct is part of broader infrastructure works including the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue/Ngong/Nyerere Interchange, as well as the Upper Hill–Haile Selassie Overpass projects.
If initial plans are implemented, it will be a dual carriageway, approximately one kilometre long, and will include cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways.
