President William Ruto has directed the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to increase the number of teachers set for promotion in the 2026-27 financial year from 34,000 to 50,000.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Speaking on Monday, October 5, during the World Teachers' Day Celebrations in Kasarani, Ruto acknowledged that TSC has already advertised for 34,016 slots for promotions, allocating about Ksh2 billion for the exercise.

However, with the new orders to add the number to 50,000 slots, the Head of State said the government will make available the funds for the same.

"TSC has already advertised 34,016 promotion opportunities. This will be the largest single teacher promotion exercise undertaken in one year," Ruto stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

"I want to encourage TSC to increase the number of promotions from 34,000 to 50,000. The government will make additional resources available for that promotion," he added.

The move comes weeks after TSC opened applications for over 34,000 teacher promotions , setting guidelines that the teachers must follow to be promoted in the 2026/27 financial year.

According to the commission, the promotion will focus on structured career progression and standardized assessment, doing away with the previous structure that prioritized age, seniority, and accumulated experience.

Under the new guidelines, teachers must have served at least three years in their current grade, maintaining a key eligibility requirement from 2025/26.

At the same time, the new framework places greater emphasis on disciplinary records , with Regulation 77 of the Code of Regulations for Teachers (2015) restricting promotion for teachers recently found guilty or issued administrative warnings.

Meanwhile, Ruto also revised his promise to Junior Secondary School teachers who have served under contract, announcing that over 20,000 of them who have served more than two years will be moved to permanent and pensionable terms from January 2027.
