President William Ruto has announced the establishment of a Kenyan Consulate General in Kazakhstan, effective immediately.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Speaking in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, May 20, during a business forum in Astana, Ruto said the consulate office will be elevated into a fully fledged embassy next year to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.

Ruto said the move would help consolidate agreements already signed while injecting new momentum into a relationship he described as key to the growth of both economies.

“Having assessed the opportunity available between our two countries and the immense relationship that can be built by our two economies, we should immediately open a consular general office here and progress it to a fully fledged embassy by next year to help consolidate the agreements we have signed and to give momentum to the relationship that will shape the growth in our two countries,” Ruto stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

According to the Head of State, expanding Kenya's diplomatic presence in Kazakhstan would accelerate cooperation in trade, investment and development partnerships even as Kenya seeks to widen its global economic engagement.

The move will also see Kenyans explore opportunities such as further studies and employment in the Central Asian country.

Kazakhstan has already opened its doors for Kenyan students and agricultural experts through proposed joint education programmes in the agro-economy sector, signalling readiness to deepen academic and technical cooperation between the two countries.

Speaking during the same forum, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev invited students from Kenya to universities in Astana, noting that this will further strengthen the ties between the two countries.

“We are also fully open to joint education initiatives in the agro-economy, and we welcome Kenyan students and experts to our institutions,” he stated.

The decision by the president comes weeks after Kazakhstan also opened its embassy in Kenya.
