Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has appointed Raila Taurayi Ernest, a nephew of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, as a board member of the Nairobi City County Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC).

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Sakaja announced the appointment through a gazette notice dated July 1, 2026, with Ernest set to serve a three-year term on the board.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 77(1) of the Water Act, 2016, the Governor, Nairobi County, appoints Raila Taurayi Ernest to be a Member of the Board of Directors of the Nairobi City County Water and Sewerage Company," the notice read.

The appointment places Odinga's nephew in the same county water company, which was once chaired by his late mother, Beryl Achieng Odinga Mungwari.

📌 What You Need to Know

Beryl, the youngest sister of the late former Prime Minister, was appointed Chairperson of the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company in 2020 by then Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

She passed away on November 25, 2025, at Nairobi West Hospital after a prolonged illness, just 40 days after the death of her elder brother, Raila Odinga.

The family's death announcement identified Beryl as the daughter of the late Oginga Odinga and Mary Odinga and the mother of Ami Auma Ambala-Hallam and Taurayi Ernest Raila.

Her appointment to the water company in 2020 saw her oversee the utility responsible for water supply and sewerage services across the whole county.

Now, months after her death, her son has been appointed to the board of the same institution by Governor Sakaja, continuing the family's association with the county-owned water utility.

According to the gazette notice, Raila Taurayi Ernest will serve as a board member of the Nairobi City County Water and Sewerage Company for a period of three years, effective July 1, 2026.
