Nairobi City County Governor Johnson Sakaja has broken his silence after leaders of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party urged him to join the party if he wants their support for re-election in the 2027 General elections.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking during an interview on Inooro FM on Wednesday, August 11, Sakaja said he was considering leaving President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joining ODM ahead of the 2027 General Election.
However, the city boss said he was still consulting widely before making a decision, amid growing pressure from political supporters who want him to associate with a particular party.
According to the governor, he will soon make his decision in a public announcement by the end of August 2026, where he will announce which party he will use to vie for a second term in office.
📌 What You Need to Know
"I was very close with Raila Odinga. He was like my father, and I spent a lot of time with him. So we are still consulting, and before the end of August, we shall see what happens," Sakaja said.
His remarks come amid growing political realignments in Nairobi ahead of the 2027 elections, with ODM seeking to consolidate its influence in the capital.
Weeks ago, Suna East MP Junet Mohammed called on Sakaja to join ODM if he wanted the party's support in the coming election.
"I want to tell Sakaja that he still desires to be re-elected as Nairobi governor in 2027, then he should come to ODM. If he decides to remain where he is, he will wait until Jesus comes back, and nobody will elect him," Junet stated.
According to Junet, UDA will not guarantee Sakaja's re-election , stating that only ODM can make him governor in 2027.
Sakaja acknowledged that ODM remains the most popular political party in Nairobi, pointing to its strong performance in the 2022 General Election.
