🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The collision occurred on Tuesday, June 9, at the Makotelo area in Mabanga, leaving several passengers seriously injured as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Witnesses said the impact of the crash was severe, with parts of the vehicles scattered across the road and nearby maize plantations, complicating rescue efforts.
Photos and videos obtained from the scene showed mangled wreckage and bodies lying along the roadside as residents and first responders attempted to assist survivors.
📌 What You Need to Know
Preliminary investigations indicate that the trailer veered from its proper lane and crashed into the matatu, killing five passengers on the spot.
The deceased included three men and two women whose identities had not been established.
Several other passengers who sustained injuries were rushed to Bungoma County Referral Hospital for treatment.
According to witnesses, the passenger vehicle was moving from Webuye towards Bungoma with the driver allegedly driving without headlights .
Despite attempts by passengers to persuade the driver to halt the journey and repair the headlights, he allegedly declined, insisting that he was experienced and familiar with the route.
“I just want to appeal to our drivers to be careful. You cannot drive without lights. I have visited the scene, and it is devastating, given the extent of the destruction,” a responder said, noting that the incident occurred at around midnight.
