World record holder Sebastian Sawe has withdrawn from the Berlin Marathon after suffering an injury, ending his plans to defend his title.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Sawe said the setback had forced him to abandon preparations for a race where he had hoped to produce something special.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you I am forced to withdraw from the BMW Berlin Marathon due to an injury,” Sawe said.

He had been targeting a strong return to competition in Berlin after making history earlier this year by becoming the first runner to officially break the two-hour barrier.

📌 What You Need to Know

Sawe did not disclose the nature of his injury, leaving fans without further details about the setback that has ruled him out of the September race.

The Kenyan star had been looking forward to producing something special on the streets of Berlin and crossing the finish line at the iconic Brandenburg Gate, but injury has now forced him to put those ambitions on hold.

“I had been looking forward to achieving something special on the streets of Berlin and crossing the finish line at the Brandenburg Gate,” Sawe said.

He added, “I want to thank everyone who continues to support me, and I wish all the runners taking part a great race.”

His absence will be a major blow to fans who expected to watch the world record holder compete again on one of marathon racing’s fastest courses.

Sawe won last year’s Berlin Marathon, making his withdrawal particularly significant for supporters who had hoped to see him return and attempt another memorable performance.
