Members of Parliament from Laikipia County have unanimously rejected the government's plan to establish an Ebola virus quarantine facility in the county, raising questions about transparency, the selection of the location, and the broader implications for public safety.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a joint statement on Friday, May 29, the lawmakers expressed concern over reports that the government intended to host the facility in Laikipia County, warning that the move has not been properly explained to local leaders and residents.
According to the legislators, they were not consulted before any decision was made, raising concerns about how the government decided to have the facility in Laikipia.
"Our collective conscience is greatly disturbed by the news that there is an intention by the Government of Kenya to have an Ebola Quarantine and Treatment Facility in Laikipia County," the MPs stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
They questioned why Laikipia was being considered as the location for the facility and whether other alternatives, including handling Ebola cases at the outbreak's source in the Democratic Republic of Congo, had been evaluated.
"Why not set up the facility at the source of the outbreak (the Democratic Republic of Congo - DRC) for greater, speedy and efficient management?" they posed.
At the same time, the MPs raised concerns about what they described as a lack of transparency regarding the proposed arrangement, asking why the plan's details had not been fully shared with stakeholders.
"Why is the government not giving full disclosure of its intentions? Why Laikipia?" the statement read in part.
The development comes amid public uproar over the planned facility, following President William Ruto's announcement of its construction at the Nanyuki airbase in Laikipia.
However, despite reports that the government set to receive over Ksh1.7 billion from the U.S. government for the facility, the court on Friday, May 28, halted the plans pending determination of a case filed by the Katiba Institute.
