The Senate Committee on National Security has ordered the arrest of Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika after she repeatedly ignored summonses tied to an ongoing inquiry.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The directive was passed during a June 22 sitting at Parliament Buildings, chaired by Committee Chairperson Isiolo County Senator Fatuma Dullo.

“Nakuru County Governor Susan Kihika is set to be arrested and presented before the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations following a resolution passed by members during a meeting held this Monday,” stated the committee.

According to the committee, Kihika had been called to testify before the Committee in connection with a petition about the alleged forced disappearance of Brian Odhiambo at Lake Nakuru National Park last year.

📌 What You Need to Know

Despite multiple invitations and a formal summons, the Governor failed to appear at any of the proceedings, frustrating Committee members and petitioners alike.

“Governor Kihika is among key stakeholders expected to provide submissions in the Committee’s consideration of a Petition concerning the alleged forced disappearances of young fishermen at Lake Nakuru National Park. However, despite being required to appear before the Senate Committee, she has not attended any of the proceedings,” stated the committee.

The Committee agreed to invoke legal measures to compel her attendance, which could mean she is physically brought before the Senate to answer questions.

Lake Nakuru has been in the headlines in the recent past over separate incidents involving deaths of fishermen and the fish in the lake being declared poisonous.

On January 18, 2025, KWS rangers arrested 33-year-old fisherman Brian Odhiambo near Lake Nakuru National Park, accusing him of illegal fishing. Witnesses reported he was beaten, stripped, and loaded unconscious into a KWS vehicle.

Rangers claimed Odhiambo later escaped into the wild, but investigators found no record of an arrest or escape in official records. Six KWS officers now face trial for his abduction, triggering protests and a Senate inquiry.
