A senior police officer who had reportedly returned to Kenya months after serving in Haiti has been killed in a suspected bandit attack in Gotu, Isiolo County.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The officer was among five people killed after a team travelling to retrieve the body of an elderly man who had been missing for two days came under attack by suspected bandits.
The victims included two police officers and three civilians, with the team coming under fire while carrying out the recovery mission.
Isiolo County Police Commander Isaac Sang and the Gotu Area Chief said the team had travelled to the area after the elderly man was reported missing and information emerged about the possible location of his body.
📌 What You Need to Know
News of the officer’s death has since spread among his colleagues, who reportedly identified him as a Chief Inspector of Police who had previously served in Haiti. The National Police Service (NPS) had not officially confirmed his deployment to Haiti or details surrounding his death by the time of publication.
The mission, however, turned deadly when armed men attacked the team, killing five people in the incident.
The death of the senior officer has since drawn messages of grief from his colleagues, particularly those who knew of his previous service in Haiti before his return to Kenya.
“He survived Haiti, only to lose his life back home in the hands of bandits,” police officer Sammy Ondimu Ngare said while mourning the fallen officer.
Ngare described the officer as both a colleague and a boss who died while serving the country.
The Gotu attack comes amid persistent insecurity in northern Kenya , where banditry and cattle rustling have been linked to livestock theft, revenge attacks and competition over pasture and water.
