Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has emerged as the most preferred choice among the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) supporters for the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2027 General Election.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
A new TIFA survey released on Friday, July 24, shows that 44 per cent of ODM supporters would prefer Sifuna as the party's presidential candidate if elections were held today.
In comparison, only 20 per cent of ODM supporters said they would back President William Ruto, while 9 per cent preferred former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, 4 per cent supported Kalonzo Musyoka and 2 per cent backed Babu Owino.
The findings are likely to strengthen Sifuna's standing within the ODM at a time when the party remains divided over its cooperation with President Ruto's Kenya Kwanza administration ahead of the 2027 polls.
📌 What You Need to Know
The poll comes just a fortnight after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) officially ratified the removal of Sifuna from his position as the party Secretary General.
According to TIFA, Sifuna has also emerged as one of the fastest-rising opposition figures nationally, with the survey finding that he commands 15 per cent support among all Kenyans in the preferred presidential candidate race.
The survey further found that 74 per cent of ODM supporters identify with Sifuna’s 'Linda Mwananchi' faction , while only 20 per cent support the rival 'Linda Ground' camp that backs continued cooperation with the broad-based government.
In its analysis, TIFA noted that the growing divide within ODM has intensified following disagreements over the future of the broad-based government arrangement between the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and ODM
The pollster observed that Oburu recently called on the dissident 'Linda Mwananchi' faction to quit the party, even as Sifuna and other leaders have hinted at the possibility of charting a different political path.
Nationally, the survey places Ruto ahead in the presidential race with 24 per cent support , followed by Sifuna at 15 per cent, Fred Matiang'i at 14 per cent, Kalonzo Musyoka at 13 per cent and Rigathi Gachagua at 7 per cent.
