Plainclothes police officers on Tuesday arrested a group of activists who attempted to stage a Saba Saba protest outside the Office of the President along Harambee Avenue in Nairobi.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The activists had gathered near the government offices carrying Kenyan flags as they sought to demonstrate peacefully before they were confronted by the officers.

Videos obtained by this publication show the protesters being forcefully bundled into nearby Subaru vehicles by men dressed in civilian clothing.

Some of the activists could be heard shouting, "Stop arresting us, you are killing us, leave us alone," as they resisted the arrests.

📌 What You Need to Know

The Office of the President, located along Harambee Avenue next to key government offices in Nairobi's Central Business District, was under heavy security as police moved quickly to disperse the gathering.

It was not immediately clear where the arrested activists had been taken, although reports indicated they were likely being held at Central Police Station in Nairobi.

The arrests came despite recent court orders directing that police officers involved in managing protests should be in official uniform and remain identifiable while carrying out their duties.

The incident unfolded as security agencies maintained a heavy presence across Nairobi during the Saba Saba demonstrations, with officers deployed on major roads and around government installations.

Earlier in the day, thousands of commuters were stranded after police mounted roadblocks on sections of Thika Road and restricted many public service vehicles from accessing Nairobi's city centre.

Security checks were reported at Kimbo, Kihunguro and the Eastern Bypass junction, causing long delays as many passengers struggled to find transport into the CBD.
