Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has confirmed that he remains in contact with former President Uhuru Kenyatta while dismissing claims that the former Head of State is funding the Linda Mwananchi movement.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In an late-night interview on Tuesday, July 28, Sifuna explained that his interactions with Uhuru are based on his position as the leader of the Azimio coalition.

He maintained that meeting and speaking with Uhuru is normal whenever they cross paths, especially in light of the former President’s friendship with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

“I do speak to Uhuru because he is the party leader of Azimio. And he was a friend to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, so when I run into him, I talk to him,” Sifuna stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

The senator denied claims that Uhuru provided financial support to Linda Mwananchi or its activities, saying that the former president’s contribution has been limited to the public encouragement of young people to participate in politics.

“No, he does not make any other contributions, maybe just encouraging us. When he speaks, and he does it in public, he says young people need to be encouraged to take leadership,” Sifuna said.

He added, “Uhuru is talking about the young people aged below 35. He wants them to participate in politics and I’m happy that many of them are answering the call,” he said.

Sifuna noted that many young people have already declared bids for positions including Member of County Assembly, Member of Parliament, Senator and Governor through the movement.

The senator added that, as a serving in a leadership position and being 44 years-old, Uhuru’s encouragement is not intended for him specifically.

In addition, the senator firmly dismissed suggestions that Uhuru provides him with political strategy.
