The government has provided a fresh update on the proposed multi-billion-shilling Mombasa Northern Bypass, with feasibility studies and due diligence assessments moving the project closer to potential implementation under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The update comes after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) hosted representatives from Africa50 and the Public Private Partnerships Directorate (PPPD) to review progress on the project and discuss preliminary findings from ongoing studies.

During a meeting held on Sunday, June 21, the three parties assessed the status of the proposed bypass and outlined the next steps required before the project can proceed to the development stage.

The ongoing due diligence process includes technical, traffic and field investigations aimed at determining the project's viability and shaping its financing and implementation framework.

In a statement shared by KeNHA after the meeting, the officials outlined the next steps towards the potential development of the project.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Coast Region, led by Director Eng. Michael Orege hosted representatives from Africa50, led by Zutari Director Altus Moolman, and the Public Private Partnerships Directorate (PPPD) as part of the ongoing assessment and due diligence process for the proposed Mombasa Northern Bypass Project ," KeNHA stated.

" The meeting provided an opportunity to review progress made, discuss preliminary findings from the ongoing studies, and outline the next steps towards the potential development of the project, including technical, traffic, and field investigations," it added.

The proposed Mombasa Northern Bypass project is a 27.1 km long road infrastructure project that aims to reduce traffic congestion in Mombasa by connecting the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway (A8) at Miritini and the Mombasa–Malindi Road (A7) at Kwa Kadzengo, Mtwapa.

It will also involve the construction of an 11.5-kilometre Bamburi Link Road that will connect the new bypass with the Malindi highway via Bamburi.

The ongoing consultations, particularly with Africa50, are seeking to finance the project through the PPP model, a model that the government has, in recent years, turned to against borrowing to fund infrastructure projects.
