Construction of the Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct in Nairobi is now 50 per cent complete, the Kenya Roads Board (KRB) has announced.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The update comes as motorists continue to experience traffic build-up around the section, with the Ksh3 billion project now expected to be completed by May 30, 2027.

“Works on the Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct continue to make steady progress, with the project now at 50 per cent completion. Expected Completion: May 30, 2027,” KRB stated.

Once completed, the Roads Board noted that the project will enhance connectivity, ease traffic flow, and improve mobility within Nairobi.

📌 What You Need to Know

The latest announcement differs from an earlier announcement by President William Ruto , who set the completion date for the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) project for December 2026.

However, KURA later revealed that the project had been delayed due to some construction constraints.

According to the authority,  the project has taken longer than expected to be completed due to the complexity of structural works required for the flyover.

It further noted that installation of columns and steel components is very complex and requires precision engineering and phased execution.

"Setting up the columns and steel works is a bit involved, but we are working around the clock to complete the works... we hope to complete and open to traffic within the shortest time possible. Kindly be patient," KURA stated.

The Kenyatta Avenue viaduct is part of broader infrastructure works, including the Valley Road-Kenyatta Avenue/Ngong/Nyerere Interchange, as well as the Upper Hill-Haile Selassie Overpass projects.
