The government has announced plans to introduce real-time tracking of all state vehicles in an effort to improve management of public assets.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a statement obtained by Kenyans.co.ke , Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service Felix Koskei said every government vehicle will be fitted with tracking devices under the Government Vehicle Management System (GVMS) to tighten enforcement.

The digital platform will allow authorities to monitor official vehicles, including their authorised drivers, fuel usage, mileage and maintenance records.

“At the centre of these reforms is the Government Vehicle Management System (GVMS), a centralised digital platform that will provide real-time oversight of every Government vehicle, its authorised driver, fuel consumption, mileage and maintenance history,” Koskei wrote.

📌 What You Need to Know

He said the system will be supported by a comprehensive database that will contain verified details of the government fleet across ministries, departments, agencies and counties.

In addition, the new system will include safeguards to protect data integrity, transparency and cybersecurity.

According to the Chief of Staff, the reforms are aimed at addressing challenges such as misuse of government number plates, missing fuel records and poor accountability of donor-funded vehicles after projects end.

“The misuse of government vehicle registration plates, gaps in fuel and mileage records, and failure to account for donor-funded vehicles after the closure of projects undermine public service and erode accountability ,” Koskei added.

He said public funds spent on fuel, insurance, repairs and replacement of vehicles must be used to support service delivery to citizens.

The planned changes were discussed during a consultative meeting involving representatives from the Executive, Parliament, Judiciary and security agencies.
