A Tanzanian couple suspected of drugging unsuspecting bus passengers and stealing their belongings has been arrested in Mombasa after detectives traced a recent case to their home in Magongo.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

According to the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the latest incident happened on September 18, 2026, when a passenger boarded a Dreamline bus from Nairobi to Mombasa.

The passenger, according to detectives, was seated next to a person who allegedly stupefied him during the journey, causing him to lose consciousness.

When the complainant later regained consciousness at Tudor Sub-County Hospital, he realised that his bag and other personal belongings were missing.

📌 What You Need to Know

The incident prompted detectives from Makupa Police Station to launch investigations as they followed leads to establish who was behind the theft.

Their trail eventually led them to Magongo, where detectives arrested the Tanzanian couple, aged 52 and 47.

Based on a search of their house, detectives found a major breakthrough in the investigation when they recovered the complainant's HP laptop and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which were the items that were missing after the passenger was drugged.

Additionally, detectives also recovered several other items from the house, including some mobile phones, 20 phone chargers, 10 wristwatches, 20 wallets and assorted clothes.

Having to recover the passenger’s belongings has helped detectives to be able to establish whether the suspects are linked to other similar incidents involving passengers travelling between Nairobi and Mombasa.

According to DCI, the two suspects remain in police custody as they undergo processing pending arrangements, while the recovered items remain detained as exhibits.
