The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) in Samburu County have vowed to paralyse learning in the county in protest over the death of a Junior Secondary School teacher under unclear circumstances.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, August 25, the unions' representatives said they will hold demonstrations and an industrial strike, giving the government a seven-day notice.
According to the unions, the teacher who has since been identified as Mark Dancun Lemaramba, who was teaching at a school in Samburu East, was killed by unknown people who are on the run.
"KUPPET and KNUT Samburu County Branch expresses deep condemnatation following the killing of a JSS teacher by the name Mark Dancun Lemaramba of Samburu East," the unions said.
📌 What You Need to Know
The teachers have called on the government, giving them a series of demands to be met or else they will take action and paralyse education services in the whole county.
At the centre of their demands is the crackdown and arrest of the culprits who caused the murder and bringing them to book through the judicial system.
We demand that the Ministry of Interior, the DCI, and the police crack down, arrest and bring all perpetrators to book without delay. We also call upon the judicial system to ensure the culprits face maximum legal penalties available under the law once arrested," the teachers added.
At the same time, they are demanding protection for all teachers and schools , as well as residential areas where the teachers live, to ensure the teachers operate without security fears.
"We urge the government to guarantee security to teachers and to all areas affected by security in Samburu County," they said.
Failure to meet these demands, the unions said, they will be forced to take safeguard measures , including withdrawal of services in the whole county, until their demands are met.
