Thika is a step closer to becoming Kenya's sixth city and the first in the Central Kenya region after the Senate Standing Committee on Devolution recommended that the Kiambu County municipality be granted city status.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The recommendation follows an inquiry and inspection process by the committee, which found that Thika had met the legal requirements for the conferment of city status.
After reviewing reports submitted by the Kiambu County Government, the committee concluded that the municipality has adequate infrastructure, public amenities and essential services to support its elevation to a city.
As part of the assessment, the committee conducted public participation, consulted key stakeholders, verified the town's population and revenue data, and inspected roads, health facilities, as well as water and sewerage infrastructure.
📌 What You Need to Know
According to the committee, the town has demonstrated its readiness for city status, paving the way for the Senate to consider and approve the recommendation.
The committee revealed that Thika surpassed the minimum population threshold required under the law, with data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics placing its population at more than 284,000 residents.
It also cited the municipality's financial performance, noting that Thika generated more than Ksh6.4 billion in revenue over the past seven years, demonstrating its capacity to sustain city operations and deliver essential public services.
The report will now be tabled before the full Senate for debate and approval before being forwarded to President William Ruto for the issuance of a city charter.
If approved, Thika will officially become Kenya's sixth city, joining Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret, which attained city status in 2024 .
Thika is home to more than 1,000 industries and has long been considered one of the country's leading industrial and commercial centres.
