🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has taken a fresh step towards implementing the Mwalimu Majuu programme after holding talks with the State Department for Diaspora Affairs on the rollout of a framework designed to facilitate the placement of Kenyan teachers overseas.

The Wednesday, June 17,  meeting brought together senior officials from both institutions and focused on operationalising the Policy Framework for Teacher Engagement Outside Kenya, which seeks to guide the recruitment and placement of teachers in foreign countries.

The discussions were led by Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs Roseline Njogu, TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi and Acting TSC Chief Executive Officer Evaleen Mitei.

📌 What You Need to Know

According to TSC, the engagement was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the commission and the State Department for Diaspora Affairs while establishing mechanisms for the ethical, safe and orderly placement of teachers in overseas jobs.

The commission said the talks also explored ways of enhancing labour mobility pathways for teachers and improving their competitiveness in the global job market .

Speaking during the meeting, Mitei pinpointed the progress made in developing the teacher engagement policy, which was formulated in 2024 to provide a framework for the recruitment and deployment of Kenyan teachers abroad.

The discussions also focused on safeguarding the welfare and rights of teachers working outside the country while ensuring that labour migration contributes to professional growth, skills development and knowledge exchange.

Officials noted that the programme has the potential to increase diaspora remittances and contribute to Kenya's socio-economic development through the export of skilled labour.

The latest engagement builds on plans unveiled by TSC in 2024 under former CEO Nancy Macharia, when the commission announced plans to facilitate international employment opportunities for Kenyan teachers.
