Police are probing a mysterious accident that resulted in a vehicle bursting into flames after it reportedly veered off Mbagathi Road in Nairobi and crashed onto a footbridge during the early hours of the morning on Saturday, July 11.

Reports indicate the incident occurred at around 6am on the flyover near the turn-off to Riara University and that the vehicle was ferrying three individuals.

Videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed the car lying on its side halfway down the footbridge stairs as flames engulfed the wreckage.

Despite widely circulating reports, the circumstances under which the car ended up on the elevated footbridge remain unclear.

Witnesses said the vehicle appeared to have diverted off the road and driven up the stairs leading to the pedestrian flyover before coming to a stop.

Footage from the scene captured the vehicle on fire as members of the public gathered nearby, with other cars stopping.

One witness claimed a police officer at the scene was calling for help while attempting to rescue a passenger trapped inside the burning vehicle, but was unable to reach them.

Social media posts alleged that there were three occupants inside the car at the time of the crash, who were trapped and died in the fire.

However, authorities had not immediately confirmed the number of occupants or any fatalities by the time of publication.

In the aftermath of the fire, rescue officials were deployed to the scene to manage traffic as emergency response operations got underway.
