The blaze, which started at around 11 pm on August 15, caused significant loses to the traders, with affected business owners left counting their losses after the fire razed their premises.

A thick smoke billowed in the night as onlookers watched from a distance.

📌 What You Need to Know

According to witnesses, fire fighters abnd emergency responders arrived late at the scene when the damage was already done, renewing calls for the Baringo County Government to strengthen firefighting and rescue services in Mogotio.

Mogotio Member of Parliament Reuben Kiborek raised questions as to why a municipality serving a growing population like Mogotio does not have a dedicated firefighting vehicle to respond to emergencies and help protect lives and property.

“It is a great shame that Mogotio Municipality does not have a fire engine. The Baringo County Government must take responsibility and take action to ensure that Mogotio has firefighting and emergency response services to protect the property and lives of its residents," Kiborek stated.

Residents also said a reliable fire and rescue service would help reduce response times and minimise losses whenever fires break out.

The incident adds to the growing number of fire incidents in the country that have led to traders and homeowners running into millions in losses.

Two days ago, residential houses in the Kangemi area of Nairobi caught fire, leading to injuries and losses.
