Kamulu traders along Kangundo Road are counting losses after unknown individuals reportedly sent by a private investor were sent to demolish their business premises.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The demolitions, carried out on Wednesday night, also resulted in the theft of property worth millions of shillings from them.

According to the traders, the premises that they were operating from were allocated by the government, and only the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has the legal authority to vacate them.

The traders say the alleged developer came out of nowhere and is colluding with the area chief to facilitate the development.

📌 What You Need to Know

According to the traders, the developer wants the section of the premises they occupy demolished to pave the way for construction of his property.

The traders allege that the developer has demolished parts of their premises several times, with the latest incident marking the seventh such demolition.

They say that following previous demolitions by the developer, they initially agreed to give way and allow access to his property. However, they allege that the developer later went beyond what had been agreed, leading to the current dispute.

“When this developer came here, which was only recently, we as traders agreed to give way and allow him access to his property. However, he has since taken advantage of that agreement. This is now the seventh time the demolitions have happened, and we have suffered significant losses,” one trader said.

The traders have also criticised security personnel in the area for allegedly standing by as unknown individuals demolished parts of their property without intervening or offering protection.

They are now calling on the national and county governments to intervene before the dispute escalates.
