🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The blaze, which took place at around 9 pm on Sunday, June 14, rapidly spread through businesses, bringing the busy transport hub to a halt as desperate efforts by traders to salvage their goods intensified.
Footage seen by kenyans.co.ke shows several traders and bystanders stranded as a huge fire consumed parts of the bus station.
Some are also seen trying to save their properties, although the intensity of the fire and smoke prevented them from doing so.
📌 What You Need to Know
According to witnesses present at the scene, the cause of the fire had not yet been established.
Although the extent of the damage had not yet been established by the time of this publication, the losses are feared to be in millions of shillings as the park hosts several small businesses that operate all sorts of activities.
From bus station offices to small kiosks to hawkers’ goods and small business stalls, the transport hub not only offers transport services but also acts as a livelihood for hundreds of the lakeside city residents.
Witnesses claim the fire could have been contained had the bus park had adequate water.
“Kisumu Bus Park needs a reliable water supply, adequate security lighting , and a stronger security system to protect traders and commuters,” a witness stated.
At the same time, they report the incident happened in front of police offices but lamented that they said little to no effort by the uniformed men to react to the inferno.
