Motorists using the Northern Bypass in Nairobi experienced heavy traffic disruption on Tuesday morning after a Super Metro bus collided with a 14-seater matatu near the Kahawa West underpass.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
According to a witness report, the accident occurred along the busy stretch heading towards Kahawa West, where the collision caused the Super Metro bus to overturn, blocking a section of the road.
Photos from the scene showed heavy traffic congestion building up on both sides of the bypass as motorists remained stranded as emergency teams responded to the incident.
Motorists were urged to avoid the route and seek alternative roads as rescue and clearance operations continued.
📌 What You Need to Know
“A Super Metro bus has fallen on its side, blocking the entire road at the Northern Bypass underpass on its way to town from Kahawa West. Traffic jam is massive,” said witnesses.
Following the crash, officers from the Kahawa West traffic base and emergency response teams immediately arrived at the scene to assist victims and manage traffic flow.
Witnesses said the collision caused panic among passengers and other road users, although authorities had not yet confirmed the number of injuries or casualties at the time of publication.
The incident led to a massive traffic snarl-up along the bypass, with some motorists forced to seek alternative routes through neighbouring estates to avoid the gridlock.
The latest incident adds to the number of road crashes witnessed across the country over the past week. Just a day ago, four people died, and seven others were injured after a Nairobi-to-Moyale bus got involved in an accident.
According to police, the accident occurred after the bus is suspected to have suffered a front tyre burst before overturning several times along the Karatina-Nanyuki Highway in Kieni East, Nyeri County.
