🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi on Monday, August 31, said the government is working to ensure that public resources are used efficiently and that every shilling allocated to government programmes delivers tangible results for Kenyans.
Speaking during a high-level dialogue on delivering results for more and better jobs in a changing development landscape in Nairobi, the CS said fiscal consolidation should not only focus on reducing government expenditure, but should also ensure that money spent on a project delivers great value.
"Fiscal consolidation is not simply about reducing expenditure. It is about ensuring that every shilling spent delivers greater value," CS Mbadi stated.

"The National Treasury is therefore strengthening the link between planning, budgeting and real-time data to improve the impact of public spending," he added.
The approach is expected to give the government a clearer picture of how public funds are being used and whether programmes and projects are achieving their intended objectives.
The latest development comes days after the Head of Public Service and the government's Chief of Staff, Felix Koskei, gave government accounting officers two weeks to review the status of projects and programmes.
The officials were directed to conduct a comprehensive review of projects and programmes under their respective dockets and consolidate their status within two weeks, in an exercise expected to provide the government with an updated picture of projects and directives that have been implemented, those still ongoing, and areas where action may be required.
The move comes as the government seeks to improve efficiency in public spending while addressing concerns about the effectiveness of government programmes.
According to Mbadi, the government's approach will involve greater focus on measurable outcomes rather than simply allocating funds to programmes.
