The Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB) has suspended Nicco Movers’ PSV operator licence with immediate effect and given the company seven days to address safety and compliance failures.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The decision comes after the Tribunal overturned the National Transport and Safety Authority’s (NTSA) earlier move to revoke the operator’s licence following two fatal incidents involving its vehicles along Thika Superhighway.

“The Respondent’s decision revoking the Appellant’s PSV Operator Licence, communicated by letter referenced NTSA/C/RT/96/1VOL. (1) and dated 9th June 2026, is hereby set aside. In substitution thereof, the Appellant’s PSV Operator Licence is suspended with immediate effect,” the tribunal ordered.

An inspection of 51 Nicco Movers vehicles found that only six met the required standards, while 45 failed.

📌 What You Need to Know

The defects included faulty or missing passenger seat belts, defective doors and window locks, faulty lights and horns, damaged bodywork and missing emergency equipment.

NTSA had also reported that 30 vehicles linked to the operator had been recorded exceeding the 80km/h speed limit.

Further, 11 vehicles were not transmitting speed-limiter data, while others lacked speed-limit records, functioning speed limiters or valid inspection certificates.

The regulatory action followed the death of 19-year-old KMTC student Eugene Mutivi Mutuku, who fell from a moving Nicco Movers vehicle along Thika Superhighway in June.

The circumstances of his death remain disputed, with his family alleging that he was pushed from the vehicle while the company said he jumped.

Following the fatal accident, NTSA suspended Nicco Movers Sacco and grounded all vehicles operating under its licence, however, operations resumed after TLAB overturned the authority’s decision .
