The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has identified several emerging teaching areas that require more trained teachers as the country transitions to the competency-based education (CBE) curriculum.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The commission has urged universities to redesign their training programmes to produce specialists in subjects it identified as facing shortages, especially at the senior school level.

Speaking during the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) stakeholder meeting on Wednesday, July 8, TSC Director of Teacher Education and Capacity Development Reuben Namburi said universities need to introduce and strengthen programmes targeting new CBE learning areas.

According to the commission, universities should start training teachers in areas such as building and construction, aviation, woodwork and creative arts.

📌 What You Need to Know

"And particularly we are pleading with universities to to begin reorganising curriculums so as to reinbuild courses that have the following subjects, : building and constructions, woodwork among others," Namburi stated.

These areas, he said, form the greater part of the CBE curriculum but are currently faced with shortages .

Other areas he highlighted include media technology, marine and fisheries, pre-technical studies, integrated science, home science, music and dance, theatre and film, and sports and recreation.

He added that the subjects were among the biggest challenges under the new curriculum because they require specialised teachers who are currently not available in sufficient numbers.

According to the TSC official, most of these subjects are new introductions under the CBE framework, requiring universities to adjust their programmes to meet the changing demands of the education system.

"Those subjects for senior school have the biggest challenge. Remember, these subjects are new introductions in the CBE curriculum," he said.
