The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has launched a nationwide training programme aimed at equipping Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers with practical Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills to enhance digital classroom instruction.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a circular dated May 22, TSC said the training will be conducted under the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP) in partnership with the ICT Authority, and is scheduled to run from June 12 to 26 across all 47 counties.
“The Teachers Service Commission and ICT Authority have planned the training of Junior school teachers in ICT integration in teaching and learning from 12th to 26th June 2026, in select venues in 47 counties,” the circular stated.
According to TSC, the initiative is part of efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework through technology-driven teaching and learning.
📌 What You Need to Know
The programme will focus on lesson planning, synchronous and asynchronous learning methods, and inclusive teaching practices for learners with special needs, seeking to equip teachers with skills to design interactive and learner-centred lessons using digital platforms and tools.
The digital platforms expected to be used during the training include Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams and Moodle, which is an open-source learning management system.
TSC said the programme aims to institutionalise digital practices developed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. During this period, remote learning strategies were widely adopted to sustain education amid nationwide school closures.
The commission directed County and Sub-County Directors of Education to ensure that each school nominates three teachers to attend the training sessions at designated sub-county venues.
To facilitate the rollout, TSC will use a “smart cascade” training model where Master Trainers will first train Trainers of Teachers (ToTs), who will then conduct training for Junior Secondary teachers at the county level.
The training comes as the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) prepares to introduce digital assessments in senior schools beginning in 2027 as part of reforms aimed at modernising examinations.
