Members of Parliament aligned with President William Ruto and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have fired back at the opposition over demands to abolish the Bomas tallying centre ahead of the 2027 General Election.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking during a political rally on Thursday, September 17, Mwala MP Vincent Kawaya dismissed the opposition's demands, arguing that a national tallying centre plays a crucial role in the presidential election.
According to Kawaya, the latest demands from the opposition led by former Chief Justice David Maraga indicate that they have sensed defeat and panicked.
“Maraga and his team have panicked. They are demanding that Bomas be scrapped, arguing that presidential results should not be tallied at a national tallying centre because the results declared at the constituency level are final,” Kawaya stated.

The MP added that it is not a national tallying centre that elects a president, clarifying that the area does not operate as a polling station.
He emphasised that the area serves as a national tallying centre, arguing that election results from all constituencies and polling stations must be aggregated.
“I want to tell them that it is not the Bomas of Kenya that elects presidents. It is not a polling station, and no election takes place there. Only tallying is done. Even if results have been announced at the polling stations, who will take the results from all areas and aggregate the totals?” he asked.
His statements come a day after the united opposition, together with activists, wrote to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) demanding that the national tallying centre be scrapped.
The opposition argued that the presidential results declared at constituency tallying centres should be final and should not be altered or re-tallied at a central venue such as the Bomas of Kenya, as was the case in the 2022 election.
“There shall be no tallying centre at Bomas or elsewhere. The IEBC commissioners shall not alter or re-tally the results announced at the constituency level,” Maraga stated.
