Ugandan police have explained that People's Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua was denied entry into Uganda after being declared persona non grata , according to an official immigration notice issued at Entebbe International Airport.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The document dated Monday, June 22, from the Ugandan Ministry of Interior,  shared with Kenyans.co.ke , shows that  Karua arrived in Uganda and was immediately denied entry, with the ministry directing airport authorities to return her to Kenya immediately.

In the document titled " Notice to Return or Convey Prohibited Immigrant", immigration authorities cited "p ersona non grata " as the reason for denying Karua entry.

"The passenger named above has been DENIED ENTRY into Uganda for the reason stated below and in accordance with the National Citizenship and Immigration Control Act (3) 1999," the notice read.

📌 What You Need to Know

"You are required to take him/her into your custody and ensure that he/she is removed from the non-permissible area under Section 66(4) of the same Act on (Date) 22/06/26 on your flight No. KQ proceeding to Kenya," it added.

The explanation comes a day after drama was witnessed at the Entebbe International Airport in Uganda after Karua was allegedly denied entry into the East African country.

According to Karua, she was going to represent Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye as his lawyer during his trial at the Ugandan courts.

The Ugandan Law Society (ULS) confirmed the developments on June 22, stating that immigration officials prevented the Senior Counsel from entering the country and directed her to return to Kenya immediately, without providing any explanation.

"Dr Kiza Besigye's and Obeid Lutale's lead counsel, Hon. Martha Karua, SC, was denied entry at Entebbe International Airport. She has been ordered to return without being given a reason," stated ULS.

In law, persona non grata means that a foreign national has been formally declared an unwelcome person by a particular government, stripped of their entry rights or diplomatic protections, and ordered to leave or barred from entering the country.
