Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has handed over the leadership of the Jubilee Party to his deputy, Fred Matiang’i, as the party prepares for its National Delegates Convention (NDC).
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking during a meeting with Jubilee officials in Nairobi on Tuesday, September 22, Uhuru said he would remain a Jubilee member and continue serving the party in a senior advisory capacity.
Uhuru said he had decided to allow Matiang’i to take over the party leadership ahead of the NDC, which is expected to formalise the transition.
“While we wait for NDC, I have decided to let my deputy take over the party leadership. I want to ask you respectfully to accept Fred Matiang’i to take the position of Jubilee party leader,” Uhuru stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
According to Kenyatta, he remains a member of the Jubilee Party and will instead serve as an advisor.
“I am still in Jubilee. I will be a senior member of the party and will be offering advisory services,” he added.
Matiang'i has been serving under Uhuru as the deputy party leader, alongside Jeremiah Kioni.
During his acceptance speech, Matiang'i pledged to steer the party's leadership from where the former president had left off.
"The way you have trusted me, I want to promise you, sir, that I will never let you down," the former Interior Cabinet Secretary stated.
The move by Uhuru followed a recent court ruling barring him from any party leadership position for six months after leaving office.
