The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced plans to roll out 500 job placements for young Kenyans under a new initiative aimed at tackling unemployment and connecting graduates with opportunities in the private sector.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday, UNDP Kenya Resident Representative Dr Jean-Luc Stalon revealed that the organisation was in the final stages of preparing a platform that will facilitate the recruitment and placement process.

According to Stalon, the programme, dubbed NextGen , is expected to begin within the next two months, starting with a pilot phase involving at least 500 placements.

The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between education and employment by linking graduates with companies willing to absorb young talent and provide them with practical workplace experience.

📌 What You Need to Know

“We are finalising the work on this platform. I believe that in about two months we will be ready to start, at least on the 500 pilot placement,” Stalon said.

Under the programme, graduates will apply through a dedicated platform, after which successful candidates will be selected based on merit and matched with participating companies through a separate system being developed in partnership with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA).

The selected graduates will be placed in companies for a period of one year and will receive a monthly stipend of between Ksh20,000 and Ksh25,000 during the placement period.

Stalon noted that the stipend is intended to encourage companies to onboard young professionals while giving graduates an opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience and improve their employability.

He added that all sectors of the economy will be eligible to participate in the programme, with efforts being made to ensure gender balance and fair representation of graduates from both rural and urban areas.

According to the UNDP official, several leading chief executives have already expressed willingness to participate in the initiative by offering placement opportunities within their organisations .
