The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) is set to construct the Mau Forest Airstrip at the Londiani Forest Station in Kericho County, with the project coming amid growing concerns over deforestation in the Mau Forest Complex.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
According to a public notice seen by Kenyans.co.ke on October 8, KFS is now inviting the public and stakeholders to give their comments on the project. KFS stated that the exercise will fall under the broader umbrella of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, which is intended to examine how the project will affect people and the environment.
“ Kenya Forest Service invites members of the public and stakeholders to a public participation baraza on the proposed construction of Londiani Airstrip as part of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment process,” the notice stated in part.
The project comes amid growing public concern over the state of Kenya’s forests and the allocation of forest land for development projects.
📌 What You Need to Know
Images and footage collected by this publication during the week show trucks transporting logs from forest areas, with some trucks carrying large quantities of timber.
Reports indicate that the logs are sourced from some forests in the Rift Valley and Western regions of the country.
The project also comes at a time when ecological justice activists around the country have been staging protests, advocating for increased protection of the country’s forests after collecting over 60,000 signatures for the office of the Cabinet Secretary f or Environment and Forestry of Kenya, Deborah Mlongo Barasa.
They highlighted that the country’s forests now sit at 8.83 per cent cover, way below the 10 per cent constitutional threshold.
For the proposed Mau Forest Airstrip, the public will get their chance to speak at a public participation baraza set for Thursday, October 15, starting at 10am at the Kenya Forestry College.
Meanwhile, Kenya Forest has asked interested stakeholders to attend the public hearings before the projects can begin.
