Kenyans have expressed frustration over long queues at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), especially on the night of Monday, August 17.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In messages shared online, Kenyans called on the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Cabinet Secretary for Tourism Rebecca Miano to improve operations at the country's main international airport.
A video shared online at around 10pm triggered an outcry, with Kenyans lamenting the long queues at JKIA.
“JKIA tonight is unacceptable. Endless immigration queues, frustrated tourists, mothers with babies, and Kenyans simply trying to get home,” one Kenyan posted.
📌 What You Need to Know
“An international airport is a country’s front door. If Kenya is serious about tourism, this cannot be the welcome we offer,” the post added.
The complaints came against the backdrop of existing congestion at JKIA, with the government acknowledging significant pressure on airport facilities during peak operating hours.
KAA has previously indicated that the airport experiences its heaviest pressure late at night and during the early morning hours, when international flights to Europe and the Middle East are clustered.
The congestion has also raised concerns over JKIA's ability to cope with rising passenger numbers as the airport continues to serve as Kenya's main international gateway.
As frustration grew online, one Kenyan warned that continued congestion could push travellers to consider landing at Kigali International Airport before travelling by road to Nairobi.
“If you have ever travelled on a rainy day or night, it is the worst experience ever, an absolute garbage of an airport,” another Kenyan said.
