Eldoret City is among the four towns whose residents will soon see changes in their water bills after the sector regulator approved new tariffs.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) has given a one-month notice through a Gazette notice dated August 17, which will see residents in Kisii, Eldoret, Narok, and Murugi Mugumango ahead of the new charges.

In Murugi Mugumango town in Tharaka Nithi County, the smallest of the four service areas, domestic consumers using up to six cubic metres will now pay Ksh25 per unit, implying that for every 6 units, residents will now pay Ksh150, an increase from Ksh113 for every six units.

Larger domestic consumption in the same area rises gradually, capped at Kh50 per cubic metre for households using more than 100 cubic metres per month.

📌 What You Need to Know

On the other hand, Kisii Water and Sanitation Company (KWASCO) customers will pay now Ksh113 per cubic metre for the lowest domestic bracket, a rise from Ksh68, up to Ksh223 for heavy users from Ksh117 for every 300 cubic metres.

KWASCO has also retained its connection and deposit fees, with new domestic water connections now costing between Ksh2,500 and Ksh15,000, depending on pipe size.

For this, water deposit fees will vary by category: domestic customers will pay from Ksh2,500, depending on meter size; commercial and institutional clients face higher charges based on classification; water kiosks will pay Ksh5,000; while sewer-only connections attract a deposit matching that for a standard water connection.

Narok Water and Sewerage Company (NARWASSCO) recorded the steepest domestic charges among the four, with rates now starting at Ksh140 and rising to Ksh200 per cubic metre, up from the previous Ksh150 for 100–300 cubic metres and Ksh170 for consumption above 300 cubic metres.

On the flip side, Eldoret tells a different story altogether, as its water utility, Eldoret Water and Sanitation (ELDOWAS), received a downward revision rather than an increase.

The reversal follows an arbitration ruling by the Water Tribunal, after ELDOWAS and its customers contested the tariffs gazetted in 2024.
