The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) has issued a fresh advisory urging farmers to take full advantage of the ongoing rains, which are expected to continue across several counties in the coming days.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The advisory, contained in the authority's latest Agrometeorological Dekadal Bulletin, highlights rainfall expected over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the South Rift Valley.
“Farmers should take advantage of the expected rainfall to support crop growth and pasture establishment,” urged KMSA.
According to the bulletin, rainfall is also set to extend to the Coastal Counties such as Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Malindi.
📌 What You Need to Know
Additionally, parts of the Southeastern Lowlands and Northeastern Kenya, encompassing counties such as Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, and Kajiado, are also urged to take advantage of the window by tending to crops and preparing their land.
KMSA says the continued rainfall will help maintain and improve soil moisture conditions in areas receiving the rains, directly supporting crop growth, pasture regeneration, and land preparation for farmers in those regions.
Even with the advice, the weatherman acknowledges that crops across many agricultural regions are currently performing well, with the ongoing rains playing a key role in sustaining growth and keeping conditions favourable for farmers working their land this season.
Moreover, beans are at maturity or pre-maturity stages in several areas, including Kericho, Dagoretti, and Nyeri, while in parts of Kakamega, harvesting of beans is already underway, and pasture conditions are expected to improve further in regions continuing to receive rainfall over the coming days.
KMSA also urges livestock farmers to conserve pasture and harvest rainwater to support livestock during drier periods, especially in northern counties such as Garissa, Mandera, Samburu, and West Pokot.
“Livestock farmers are encouraged to conserve pasture and harvest rainwater to support livestock during drier periods,” stated Kenya Met.
