Human rights group Vocal Africa has moved to court seeking orders barring National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula and his Senate Counterpart Amason Kingi from participating in political campaigns.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The petition, filed at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, July 8, seeks orders barring the two Speakers from taking part in partisan political campaigns while serving in their current positions.

The petitioner accused the duo of violating the Constitution by allegedly using the authority, prestige and influence of their offices to promote President Ruto's re-election bid.

According to the petitioner, although Wetang'ula and Kingi have a right to hold personal political views, they cannot use their offices to participate in partisan political activities.

📌 What You Need to Know

They faulted Wetang'ula for allegedly attending a series of political events between June and July this year where he reportedly urged Kenyans to support Ruto's second-term bid.

Among the events cited is a political rally in Likoni, Mombasa County, where the Speaker is alleged to have encouraged supporters to back the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The petition also references a public function at Emusire High School in Emuhaya Constituency, where he allegedly urged residents to register as voters and support President Ruto's re-election.

Vocal Africa further cited a rally held on July 3 at Silverline Grounds in Eldoret, described as the launch of the 'Tutam' campaign, where Wetang'ula allegedly declared the start of Kenya Kwanza's nationwide campaigns.

Kingi is also accused of taking part in political meetings organised by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), including a gathering at Burhani Grounds in Mombasa, where he allegedly endorsed grassroots mobilisation in support of Ruto.

According to the petitioner, Kingi continued attending political meetings across the Coast region during June and July to campaign for President Ruto's re-election.
