The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has raised the possibility of the anticipated El Niño conditions to 100 per cent, up from 80 per cent, after new forecasts confirmed an exceptionally high likelihood that the weather pattern will stick around.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a statement shared with Kenyans.co.ke on September 3. According to WMO's Global Producing Centers, there is now an almost certain chance that El Niño will persist all the way through to February 2027.

"Forecasts from WMO’s Global Producing Centres indicate an 'exceptionally high likelihood of nearly 100% that El Niño will persist through to February 2027," WMO stated.

These latest developments now exacerbate the previous probability by WMO, which estimated an 80 per cent likelihood of El Niño conditions emerging between the last two months, with probabilities rising to near or above 90 per cent through September and November.

📌 What You Need to Know

The driving force behind this development, according to the global met, is the unusually warm ocean water spreading across the tropical Pacific, a pattern scientists have been tracking closely in recent months.

Forecasters now expect El Niño to continue strengthening in the coming weeks, eventually reaching very strong intensity before peaking toward the end of this year.

The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has chimed in on this development, describing the phenomenon as nothing ever seen before, warning that the planet is heating up at a fast pace, and that we ought to be worried, and urging for prompt climate action.

“El Niño is being supersized before our eyes. The science leaves no room for doubt: the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up. Sea surface temperatures are rising, and the world is in the danger zone for extreme weather. The race now is between rising risks and our commitment to take climate action and protect people. We must win that race,” said Guterres.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo has echoed similar concerns, noting that El Niño's growing intensity threatens to hit vulnerable communities and economies hardest.
