🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In an alert on Wednesday, September 16, the World Bank said its attention had been drawn to complaints about individuals posing as its staff who were reportedly contacting government ministries, departments, agencies, and other stakeholders.
The bank said the impostors are allegedly using phone calls to solicit money or personal information from unsuspecting victims.
The World Bank identified two phone numbers allegedly being used by the suspected impostors, warning against interaction with them.
📌 What You Need to Know
"It has come to our attention that individuals are impersonating World Bank Group (WBG) staff and contacting government ministries, departments, agencies, and other stakeholders," the World Bank stated.
"Please do not share personal information, make payments, or act on requests from these callers," it added.
However, the global agency stated that it does not ask for money to facilitate any loans or grants, adding that this cannot be done over the phone.
The bank urged government institutions, partners and other stakeholders to remain vigilant when dealing with individuals claiming to represent the institution.
It further cautioned members of the public against sharing personal information, making payments or acting on requests received from the suspected fraudsters.
According to the bank, anyone who receives suspicious communication should report it to the nearest police station or other relevant authorities so that necessary action can be taken.
