The National Youth Council (NYC) has announced October 9, October 16, and October 30, 2026, as the dates for elections that will culminate in the selection of new youth representatives after a 14-year wait.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The Council announced the dates as it intensified civic education ahead of the elections, with hundreds of young people gathering at Thika Technical Institute in Kiambu County on Wednesday, September 16, to learn about the electoral process.
The civic education exercise, led by NYC Acting Chief Executive Officer Gloria Wawira, focused on explaining the election structure and requirements for young people seeking to participate in the polls.
According to the council, ward-level elections will be held on October 9, 2026, followed by constituency-level elections on October 16.
📌 What You Need to Know
The process will culminate in the National Youth Congress on October 30 , when 580 delegates elected from constituencies across the country will converge to elect 16 national representatives.
The Council urged eligible young people to register and participate in the elections, with voter registration currently being conducted through its official elections platform: elections.nyckenya.go.ke
Youths aged between 18 and 35 years are eligible to participate in the elections, both as voters and candidates upon meeting the requirements set out for the process.
The Council also emphasised the importance of integrity requirements under Chapter Six of the Constitution for individuals seeking elective positions.
NYC Chairperson of the National Elections Committee George Osaso said the elections were intended to ensure that the Council's leadership reflects Kenya's diverse youth population.
“The Council must have the face of Kenya, so if it produces something that does not have or reflect the face of Kenya, the Cabinet Secretary through these other appointed people will have to bring in that face of Kenya and also bring in persons with disabilities,” Osaso said.
