The government has begun the search for land in Nairobi to build a new office complex for its permanent missions to the United Nations, as the country positions itself to strengthen its presence at the UN’s Nairobi headquarters.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Through the Permanent Mission of Kenya to the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) and UNEP, the government has invited landowners, property developers and authorised agents to submit offers for land suitable for the proposed development.

The government is seeking a parcel measuring approximately 1 to 1.5 acres, with preference given to land within Gigiri’s diplomatic hub and about three kilometres of the UN Complex.

According to the Expression of Interest (EOI) seen by Kenyans.co.ke , the proposed site will be used to construct a purpose-built office block for Kenya’s Permanent Mission to UNON and UNEP and its Permanent Mission to UN-Habitat.

📌 What You Need to Know

The government said the two missions have operated from rented premises since their establishment in the 1970s , but the existing offices lack adequate space and essential facilities required to effectively carry out their mandates.

The proposed development is intended to improve the missions’ operational efficiency, security and institutional presence as Nairobi continues to host major United Nations agencies.

According to the government, the land must be in a secure and accessible neighbourhood and be zoned for commercial, institutional or compatible mixed-use development.

It must also have access to roads, water, sewer, electricity and telecommunications infrastructure.

At the same time, the government requires sellers to provide valid title documents, with leasehold properties required to have at least 50 years remaining on the lease.

Interested parties have until October 13, 2026, at 11am to submit their Expressions of Interest at the Permanent Mission of Kenya to UNON and UNEP.
