The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has extended the closure of Eldoret Road in Nairobi by another three months.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a statement on Monday, September 28, KURA said the road, which was supposed to be opened to the public by September 18, would remain closed for a further three months, with the opening now expected for December 30, 2026.
The Nairobi road was closed on May 18 for over four months to allow for the construction of the Vehicular Bridge across the Nairobi River.
However, the authority said the extension was due to unforeseen logistical and site-related challenges during the construction of the bridge.
📌 What You Need to Know
Delays in the delivery of construction materials required for the bridge also contributed to the delay, with KURA saying it was beyond their control.
"We wish to notify the general public that the closure of the section of Eldoret Road, Nairobi, earlier communicated to run from 6 AM Monday, May 18, 2026, till 6 PM Friday, September 18, 2026, has been extended until 6 PM Wednesday, December 30, 2026," Kura stated.
"The extension has become necessary due to unforeseen logistical and site-related challenges encountered during the construction of the Vehicular Bridge across the Nairobi River, including delays in the delivery of critical construction materials and equipment, which were beyond the contractor's control," it added.
The authority said it remains committed to ensuring the construction is fast-tracked and completed in due time, promising to open the road on December 30.
KURA asked motorists to continue using the alternative routes it had provided before as work resumes in the affected area.
Motorists can use parallel local streets in the Eastland area and nearby major connectors to reach Jogoo Road and other arterial roads to the north and south of the closed section.
