Canada has updated its travel advisory for Kenya following confirmation of an Ebola case in Nairobi linked to the ongoing Bundibugyo outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In its latest guidance, Canada urged travellers to avoid healthcare facilities in affected areas unless urgent treatment is required, follow local health guidelines and maintain appropriate hygiene.
Visitors have further been told to monitor their health during their stay and for 21 days after leaving Kenya, seeking immediate medical attention and isolating themselves if symptoms develop.
“Monitor your health while in Kenya and for 21 days after you leave. If you develop symptoms of Ebola disease, isolate yourself from others and seek medical care right away,” the advisory stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
The Canadian government warned that although the risk to most travellers remains low when precautions are followed, they should avoid contact with suspected patients, contaminated items and the bodies of people who have died from Ebola or unexplained illnesses.
Days ago, the United States instructed potentially exposed citizens to monitor their health and seek medical advice if symptoms develop, while the United Kingdom advised against all but essential travel to some parts of Kenya.
On Thursday, October 10, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale reassured foreign governments, tourists and investors that Kenya remains open to visitors , as the country continues tracing contacts linked to the Ebola case, with 57 people identified and 10 placed in quarantine.
The Ministry of Health said that one imported case did not by itself amount to a wider outbreak and said the government was relying on verified health information to guide its response.
The government has also intensified surveillance and introduced enhanced screening at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for travellers arriving from 10 countries .
Canada’s latest advisory comes amid its existing recommendation for travellers to exercise a high degree of caution across Kenya because of terrorism threats and high crime rates.
