The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has issued a seven-day notice to revoke the broadcasting licences of 22 television stations, after which they will no longer be authorised to provide services under the affected licences.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a Gazette Notice published on Friday, October 9, the regulator said the revocation would take effect seven days from the date of publication.
“Notice is given pursuant to the provisions of the Kenya Information and Communications Act that the Communications Authority of Kenya shall revoke the postal licences of the following service providers within seven (7) days from the date of this Gazette Notice,” CA stated.
The authority added that any resources held under the licences would revert to it once the revocation takes effect.
📌 What You Need to Know
The listed stations hold commercial free-to-air television licences, which allow them to broadcast content without requiring viewers to pay subscription fees.
Several of the stations are faith-based broadcasters, including Holy Spirit’s TV, Greater Life Television, Assemblies of God Kenya Television Network and Bethsaida Television.
Others on the list include Madaras TV, Revival Wave TV, Mshindi TV, Mountain of Peace TV, Riigi TV, Ngoyoo TV, Nene TV, WTV, Kim Kim TV and Wendo TV.
The Gazette notice also lists other broadcasters facing revocation, including New Breed Connect TV, Shem TV, Ikengi TV, Thespy TV, Technique View Television and Engako Television Network.
Separately, two media companies have sought to terminate their licences voluntarily. Landmerc Limited has requested the termination of its licence for Tandaza FM, which operates as a commercial free-to-air radio station.
Moreplex Television Limited has also requested the termination of three licences associated with Moreplex TV Kenya: a terrestrial subscription licence, an SMS licence and a landing rights licence.
