The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has summoned United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar to answer questions about his alleged remarks concerning dead voters.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Omar is expected to appear before the electoral body on October 21 to explain his remarks that have had the opposition up in arms.

"The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), through its Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee, has summoned Hon. Hassan Omar to appear before the Committee on October 21, 2026, at Anniversary Towers," IEBC said in a statement shared with Kenyans.co.ke .

According to IEBC, Omar is to respond to remarks made on September 11, 2026, during a political rally in Jomvu, Mombasa County, which sparked massive political controversy.

📌 What You Need to Know

During the event, where he also officially declared his bid for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, Omar allegedly made remarks suggesting that the fingerprints of deceased people should be used to vote.

"The summons arises from statements allegedly made by the former Senator at a public rally in Mombasa County on September 11, 2026, on voting by deceased voters," IEBC stated.

The statements provoked immediate backlash from the opposition, with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders from Mombasa demanding disciplinary action and expressing fears over potential electoral manipulation.

Omar later clarified his remarks on September 14, claiming they were metaphorical and intended to highlight concerns over the integrity of the voter register rather than an actual plot.
