The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is exploring new surveillance and threat-detection technologies to strengthen monitoring of the country's waters and coastline.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The technologies were presented by Saab, a Swedish defence and security company, during a visit to the Kenya Navy at Mtongwe Naval Base in Mombasa County.

Kenya Navy Commander Major General Paul Otieno hosted the Saab delegation during the visit, which focused on emerging naval capabilities and their potential application in maritime security.

Among the systems presented were advanced maritime surveillance and coastal radar designed to improve the detection and tracking of activities at sea.

📌 What You Need to Know

The firm showcased to the Kenyan military 3D radar technology and Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) , which can detect and track drones and support responses to aerial threats.

The systems could help the Navy improve its awareness of activities taking place both along the coastline and within Kenya's maritime domain.

The presentation also covered underwater surveillance, with the firm demonstrating sensors and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) designed to detect and monitor activities beneath the surface.

According to the firm, the technology is designed to provide surveillance capabilities below the sea, where monitoring can be more challenging using conventional systems.

The engagement comes as Kenya faces the need to maintain surveillance of its Indian Ocean waters, territorial waters and wider maritime interests.

The Kenya Navy is responsible for supporting maritime security , including efforts to detect and respond to threats affecting the country's waters and coastal areas.
